Sparta Prague and Monaco to draw @ 5/2
Monaco enjoyed a revival last season when finishing third in Ligue 1, with proven performers Wissam Ben Yedder and Kevin Volland netting 36 goals between them. However, there are quite a few young players in the supporting cast and, even though they are exciting prospects, this could be something of a culture shock. Sparta overcame a 2-1 first-leg deficit when beating Rapid Vienna 2-1 on home turf and have a couple of recent Czech league wins, so they can hold their own here.
Shakhtar Donetsk to win at Genk @ 6/5
Shakhtar were unlucky not to reach the knockout stages last term, finishing third on eight points in a pool featuring Real Madrid, Borussia Monchengladbach and Inter Milan. Genk were only a distant fourth in the regulation part of Belgium’s Jupiler League last season, finishing 20 points adrift of table toppers Club Brugge, before rising to second in the play-offs. They have started slowly this term, drawing 1-1 with Standard Liege before losing 4-3 to Oostende, whereas Shakhtar have two wins in the Ukraine.
Red Star Belgrade to beat Sheriff @ 7/20
Dejan Stankovic’s side gave AC Milan a big scare in the Europa League knockout rounds last term, only going out on away goals, and look in decent shape this season. They thrashed Kairat Almaty 5-0 on home turf to progress 6-2 on aggregate in between a couple of domestic victories in Serbia, with the experienced Mirko Ivanic scoring in all of those games. Sheriff made light work of Teuta and Alashkert but this represents a big step up in class for the Moldovan outfit.
Olympiacos to beat Ludogorets @ 7/10
The Greek side have a strong European pedigree and were far from disgraced in a group featuring Manchester City, Porto and Marseille last season, eventually finishing third. Olympiacos went on to knock PSV out of the Europa League and even secured a 1-0 success at Arsenal, albeit after going down 3-1 in Piraeus. Ludogorets, who lost 3-1 and 4-0 to Tottenham in that competition last term, are no mugs, but we’re sticking with the bigger club in our Champions League predictions.
Young Boys to win at CFR Cluj @ 7/5
The Swiss outfit will be determined to make amends for just missing out on the group stage for the past couple of seasons, having experienced the excitement of taking on Juventus, Manchester United and Valencia the year before. Slovan Bratislava were only just shaded 3-2 on aggregate in the last round but those efforts and a couple of domestic outings should have put Young Boys spot on for this contest. CFR Cluj only picked up one point from two meetings between these sides in the Europa League last term.
